Beautiful movie. A true science fiction adventure at it’s best.


Not exactly what I expected, but a movie well worth watching nonetheless. It’s a story about a journey through zone infected by alien organisms. Where it lacks action, it makes up by amazing scenery. As you follow the two main characters, you see the fight between humans and the aliens from their point of view – on the TV, in the radio, in the scenery all around them. Most of the destruction happened before the main protagonist get on the scene, which really draws you in and it gives you this eerie feeling it just might be real. While you don’t see much of the monsters, you can always feel their presence. At the end you can only feel awe, respect and humility towards the huge octopus-like aliens.


The actors are good and you can relate to them. Whitney Able is stunning girl in a very natural way and she deserves to be cast in lead roles more often.


For such a low-budget movie it’s amazing how well it came out. I give it solid 8/10 and hope we will see more movies like this.

Decent Flick!


Phillip Noyce’s ‘Salt’ is a decent action-thriller that focuses on Spys. The film has it’s share of shortcomings, but manages to sail safely.


Angelina Jolie stars as Salt a CIA agent, who is accused of being a double agent. Her journey from there-after, is filled with loads of action, and many twists and turns.


‘Salt’ has a paper-thin plot, but it’s list of twists keep the proceedings alive. However, I would like to state, that, the culmination doesn’t appeal. The actual twist in the tale doesn’t leave any impact whatsoever. Writers Kurt Wimmer and Brian Helgeland could’ve truly worked for a better culmination.


Phillip Noyce’s direction is fair, while the stunts are the mainstay of the film. Angelina Jolie is excellent as Salt and goes on to prove her potential once again. Among other performances, Liev Schreiber and Chiwetel Ejiofor leave a lasting impression.


On the whole, ‘Salt’ also offers some spice. Apart from a tacky culmination, this one truly ranks as a fit popcorn flick. Reccmended!

Great funny characters and Jonah Hill is great


Aldous Snow (Russell Brand) is a messed up rock star. He has a damaged relationship with his ex Jackie Q (Rose Byrne). Aaron Green (Jonah Hill) pitches an idea for a 10 year anniversary of Aldous Snow’s successful Live at the Greek Theatre show to label head Sergio (Sean Combs). Aaron is given the chance to wrangle Aldous for his big chance.


The Judd Apatow friends gather together to do another hilarious movie. Russell Brand is wonderously wild and childlike. Jonah Hill is a great straight man, charmingly funny and sweet. The combo is a home run. Even P Diddy is great as the bombastic exec. Jonah and Elisabeth Moss are hilarious together in the beginning. The Sarah Marshall call back is hilarious. But it’s not just all hilarity. Aldous has real personal problems and not just about the drugs. It’s a wonderful mix of heart and comedy. Start stroking the fury wall.

Patchwork filmmaking


Alice (the eternal Mila Jovovich) is back and in multiple copies. Her prime target is the Umbrella Corporation and the now T-virus enhanced Albert Wesker (Shawn Roberts). After a full frontal attack the Umbrella base is left destroyed, but the whole batch of Alice clones get blown sky-high, when Wesker manages to fly away unscathed and detonate the plant. Conveniently for the movie the original Alice survives unscathed as a castaway on-board the plane. During a skirmish with Wesker Alice gets injected with a antidote, that turns her back to being human (but somehow she still manages to survive a terrible plane crash unharmed and keeps her over-the-top fighting abilities largely intact). With Wesker dead and Umbrella disposed of Alice returns to the States to search of her friends, who left for sanctuary in Alaska, only to disappear in mysterious circumstances.


In general a much improved instalment of the series and if anything the whole series remains enjoyable, if uninventive. In this part Anderson actually outdoes himself and instead of thinking up something original he starts borrowing scenes from other movies. Wesker looks and fights like Neo’s twin brother, the new zombies bring to mind “Blade 2″, whilst The Executioner has a disturbing familiarity to Pyramid Head of the Silent Hill franchise. Nonetheless some of the scenes are very memorable with the combat with The Executioner a real highlight for the movie (especially given the abrupt ending of the final fight).


There may be a bit too many generic elements with this movie, but that has never stopped the franchise from being mindless slash-em-up fun. Even if a somewhat weakly scripted one. Also Alice remains a very likable heroine, so no matter how bad the script if she gets proper screen time and a couple of intriguing fights, than the movie just never seems to feel like a waste of time.

Always Kiss Like It Is the First Time and the Last Time


The uptight stager Anna Brady (Amy Adams) from Boston is a planner that stages apartments for Realtors. Anna has been dating the cardiologist Jeremy (Adam Scott) for four years and they are buying a high standard apartment in Davenport together. Anna expects Jeremy to propose her in a dinner but he gives a pair of rings to her instead and travels to Dublin for a congress. Anna decides to meet him in Dublin on the February 29th and propose him in accordance with an old Irish folklore tradition from the Fifth Century of leap-year proposals by women. However, her airplane is forced to land in Wales due to bad weather and she is not able to find a connection since the Dublin airport is closed. She decides to travel in a supply vessel but she is forced to disembark in Dingle due to a storm. Anna walks to the only restaurant and inn of the area and she hires the cynical and sarcastic owner Declan (Matthew Goode) to drive her to Dublin. Declan accepts to drive her since he needs money to quit his debts and along their journey they have many incidents. But they fall in love for each other but when they finally arrive in Dublin, Jeremy proposes Anna.


“Leap Year” is a delightful and innocent romantic comedy. The sweet and gorgeous Amy Adams shines in every scene and Matthew Goode shows a perfect chemistry with her. The plot is predictable but I laughed a lot with the funny situations along the journey of Anna to arrive in Dublin. I know that there are bitter viewers that do not enjoy this type of film that will never be nominated to any award. But I loved “Leap Year” with the lovely Amy Adams and the awesome landscapes of Ireland. My suggestion: invite your wife, fiancée or girlfriend; enjoy this adorable film; and always kiss her like it was the first time and the last time. My vote is eight.

Touching and wonderfully filmed with some believable acting


I have to admit I wasn’t expecting to like this film. I don’t hate this type of film, but I had heard mixed feelings on Dear John, there were those who said it was touching and others who said it was too clichéd. Well after been blown away by The Notebook(book and movie), I saw Dear John. After seeing it, I don’t think it is as good as The Notebook, but it was surprisingly good in my opinion. The characters are clichéd, and the beginning was a tad too fluffy for my liking, while there are some pacing issues. But while the book is better, having more depth and emotional punch, I was surprised at how touching Dear John actually was. The story is nice and believable enough, and there is some decent scripting. The direction is good too, while the cinematography and scenery are breathtaking and the score beautiful. Channing Tatum(my sister kept raving at how hot he was) and Amanda Seyfried are great and are believable together, while Richard Jenkins is heart breaking as Tatum’s autistic father(I immediately sympathised with him as I have real problems with communicating with people and feeling comfortable around people and places I am not familiar with). I also liked the ending, it was ambiguous but also clever and subtle, and I think an improvement over the ending of the book(the book’s only weak link). In conclusion, touching and well made, definitely worth a peek. 7/10 Bethany Cox

At Mount Holliston, snowboarders Dan Walker, his girlfriend Parker O’Neil and his best friend Joe Lynch don’t have enough money to buy lift tickets. Parker bribes Jason, a lift-worker, with one hundred dollars. When the system is nearing closure, they force Jason to let them have one last pass. However, Jason needs to resolve a problem and his colleague misunderstands his instructions and stops the lift. The trio of skier and snowboarders gets stranded on the chairlift near the top of the mountain. When they see that the lights of the ski resort had been turned off, they need to make a choice: leave the chairlift or freeze to death.

Just chillin’


Three college students are confined to a skilift suspended far above ground, isolated, with no one knowing about it(and no way to contact anyone), and realize that since they could be there for days while the resort is closed, they have to take matters into their own hands. That in itself wouldn’t be enough to keep us interested, so there’s conflict introduced right away, and the characters(and yes, we mostly focus on this trio), rather than being obnoxious, are sufficiently likable and different from one another. We have two friends that grew up together, and one of them now has a girlfriend, and that friend is now having trouble “choosing” between the other two, or making equal time for them. No one is shown as right or wrong in the situation, and we sympathize with all three. And yes, one of them is Iceman. I guess he doesn’t have a handle on his powers yet. This is about the will to live, and we find ourselves really dreading into the threatening environment. Tension is built well(and it does not let up, there is *no* relief), there are no jumpscares, and the sound-side does much of it… we do see a bit(there’s a little brutal, bloody, gory violence in this), though. I couldn’t help cheer and yell advice at the screen. You want these people to make it. The acting is good. Dialog is realistic. This plays on primal fears, hypothermia, being eaten, heights, etc. The pacing is well-done, you don’t stop caring… there are developments(not enough for it to be overwhelming), they’re not just whining about their problem, and what happens is effective. Make-up and other FX are a bit hit and miss. This is 85 minutes sans credits. Done by the director of Spiral, while this is not as psychologically stunning as that, it does really *work*. It’s entirely practically done, with no CGI, and yes, they were up there for filming. I recommend this to anyone who likes the concept. 7/10

Mystic Julia


Most people I know are going to see this film for Julia Roberts. It is that mysterious link that film stars create with their audiences. We develop a sort of craving to see them again. So a new Julia Roberts movie? Sure. Absolutely. I’m only a few years younger than Julia Roberts which means we have grown together. So, to see her play a woman facing a sort of middle age crisis makes you look inwards with a smile, the nervous kind. I must also say I’m a guy, heterosexual, but not fanatically so. I don’t have the fears that, Jay Leno for instance, shows, when confronted by a “chick flick” If anything “Eat Pray Love” proves that men and women are not that far apart, we simply deal with the same problems in different ways. Here, the filmmakers don’t shy away from the conflict and the balance is real. Julia’s husband, played beautifully by Billy Crudup, accuses her of leaving the marriage without an explanation. He is the one with the broken heart. In Italy, Julia eats and our own gastric juices start to do their thing. I glanced at my watch, I was ready to run into the nearest Italian restaurant and have a relationship with a pizza myself. Italy, Rome and even Naples look so clean that I hardly recognized it. CGI? Luca Argentero plays Julia’s tutor/tourist guide. He is a good looking guy that after appearing in the Italian version of the Big Brother reality show, he became a sort of local movie star and shows promising acting chops. Here, strangely enough, he looks small but charming all the same. India brings the wonderful Richard Jenkins and a solid piece of advise: “don’t give up on love” Bali, well, Bali is something else and it is there that Javier Bardem comes into the picture and provides us with the best scene in the film. I’m not going to tell you what it is but let me just say that involves his son and gives us, finally, a side of Julia we didn’t know how much we missed. Empathy. Feeling something for somebody else’s feelings. I think I may see the film a second time just to see that scene again. I also should mention that James Franco plays a young actor – not what I call a stretch – considering he is my favorite of the young actors around. I will challenge other members of my sex to go and see it. Not to be afraid to feel identified or even chocked up. I can assure you it’s not going to diminish you manliness in any way and will awake your appetites, big time.

The dancing = impressive. Everything else = dreadful.


If you’ve seen one break-dance flick, then let’s be frank, you’ve seen them all. The blue print is the same each and every time, lots of awesome dance sequences with gap-filling scenes of excruciating acting, non-existent plot and direlogue that wouldn’t feel out of place in a Z-grade horror film. With those standards in mind, the most effective entries into this genre do two very simple things: maximise the eye-boggling dance routines and minimise the yawn-inducing guff that fills the rest of the runtime.


Step Up 3D only gets half of the above equation right. An unnecessary amount of time is wasted on boring dross like predictable plot twists and deep and meaningful (read: long and laughable) conversations about how profoundly dancing can affect people. Honestly, who cares? From the moment the main character tells his new BFF that “he’s BFAB, born from a beatbox” in the first ten minutes, all further dialogue should’ve been ceased immediately. I’m serious, they should’ve let the music and moves do the talking for the remaining 90 minutes. That way our gag-reflex wouldn’t have been tested by Vinson (ex-Home and Away star) and Malambri’s acting.


When the bodies are twirling, contorting, flinging, jumping, smashing or moving like a robot the film unsurprisingly finds its legs. Choreographed with flair and panache, the set-pieces incorporate the 3D technology decently enough by having dancers approach the camera with fast, whippy hand movements, however the depth of the stage was employed more successfully by its British counterpart StreetDance 3D. Regardless, there are still a handful of entertaining dance-offs that impress on varying levels.


Replete with the freshest hip-hop tunes and sporadic inventiveness – mainly in the form of illuminated costumes – this trilogy-closer may tickle your fancy, but that is wholly reliant on whether you’re BFAB or not.

Predators (2010, R)


The latest Predator movie, “Predators”, tries to follow in the difficult footsteps of James Cameron’s “Aliens”. It’s a sequel to the first film (“Predator”), it emphasizes action like the original, and it mixes in a few interesting ideas in its own thought experiment. It shares some characteristics with past films to depict humans as game for hunters (“Death Race 2000″, “The Running Man”) and to drop humans in a mysterious environment as select participants in a something (“Cube”). The mixture of these elements, with additional ideas about warfare and morality, creates an entertaining brew of action, Sci-Fi, and adventure.


Robert Rodriguez (as producer) and Nimród Antal (as director) breath new life into the Predator franchise. As aliens go, Predators replicate the typical human form as a safe foundation and then get enough simple variations to make the resulting being somewhat alien and believable. The movie perhaps imagines that the Predators control multiple life supporting planets (suggested by their advanced technology), and have enough of them to turn at least one into a hunting preserve, which becomes central to the story. They hunt multiple kinds of species at the preserve, but humans are a particular favorite. And these games have been going on for many seasons. We don’t learn much about Predator culture broadly speaking, but we get little hints about them and their intentions.


The dominant perspective is that of 8 newly arrived humans. They wake up in free fall over a jungle, their shoots open automatically, and they don’t trust anyone. A little luck helps get a team assembled when Royce (Adrien Brody) and Isabelle (Alice Braga) work together to settle down a trigger happy Russian soldier (Oleg Taktarov). They are suspicious enough of their new environment to seek answers and not just shoot anything they meet. Some of this seems convincing. Someone waking under such strange conditions would likely suppose that other people were also taken from their previous lives and were likewise dropped off. The plot also has enough of the opposite mind set (where a life form attacks fellow game participants in a panic) to make sense of it as a realistic world and not just a simple setup for a death hunt.


Royce (Adrien Brody) emerges as the reluctant leader, but Isabelle (Alice Braga) is the connective tissue of the group. The other humans seem mostly chosen for their skill as human predators in the human world, including soldiers from around Earth, a death row inmate, a silent Japanese gang member, and a Mexican drug cartel gunman. But one member says he’s an American doctor, Edwin (Topher Grace), and Royce notes he seems out of place with a team of mercenaries, which adds an element of suspicion between the group members.


The group learns their situation indirectly from plot twists, but Royce makes a few logical deductions from clues around them: A dead special forces soldier, previously engaged in the game, had left a perimeter of defensive traps (for what purpose?). A herd of vicious, thorny alien creatures suddenly attack them and then run away at the sound of a whistle (who directs them?). Royce concludes that the creatures were meant to scurry and test the humans in the same way humans use dogs in game hunting. And, third, the Predators maim a human and use him as a trap to lure other humans (a tactic made popular by Kubrick’s “Full Metal Jacket”). It isn’t clear why the Predators use such a trap when they have such excellent fighting skills and a warrior ethic, but perhaps it’s meant to bring out the other humans and open them to attack.


In any case, it presents a theme of survival versus morality. Do they walk into the trap and help the maimed man (reducing their survival chances) or do they leave him and save themselves? It recurs throughout the movie. Of course, a popular movie made to revitalize the Predator franchise can’t produce any shocking takes on the question, and can only give the socially acceptable answer. But it does mix in a few unexpected twists on the theme when the group meets a scavenger and survivalist, Noland (Laurence Fishburne), another human soldier who has experience fighting Predators for many seasons. (He measures seasons by the number of times humans have dropped in and Predators have wiped them out). Laurence Fishburne gives a strong and compelling performance with such a short time to make his character convincing.


Noland is in favor of survival over any moral considerations. Noland (Laurence Fishburne) gives us interesting information on their intentions. Predators seek to continually enhance their weapon technology, abilities and techniques by adapting from their hunt encounters and occasionally from their defeats. We don’t see how they pass along such knowledge, but we can imagine they must have a communication method or a warrior, trade-secrets database, perhaps accessible from their technology.


Royce is also conflicted on the question. But the Predators are not. The Predators have a warrior ethics and try to avoid turning the hunt into mindless slaughter. They don’t always succeed and break their ethos regularly with many technological advantages, including advanced camouflage and energy beam weapons.


One of the best parts to the movie is its vision of the hunting preserve. It allows us to imagine the rules of the place and figure out how it works along with the characters. The action is fast paced and interesting, but it doesn’t overwhelm the plot with forced action-stunt sequences; they mostly seem to arise out of the plot. It doesn’t deliver a broad or intricate vision of the aliens, but as a rare plus it refuses to destroy some of the novel parts of its scenario after so lovingly putting them together. Usually anything alien from our social norms is prime target for destruction!

Bobby, a man with a young daughter, shows him around; Craig notices Noelle, about his age. He tries to keep his friends from finding out where he is. Little things: he draws, goes to therapy, sings, helps Bobby rehearse an interview. Is this the stuff of insight?

This is a film about second chances and in particular giving yourself a second chance. We all get very overwhelmed and stressed out because of our very busy and hectic lives, however, sometimes you just need to step back and give yourself a break from all of the drama in the world and focus on what is really important to you in your life. After a little thought all of the things that stress us out on a daily basis become very petty and unimportant and the things with true meaning and value in our lives shines through. “It’s Kind of a Funny Story” is a film based off of the 2006 novel by Ned Vizzini of the same name. The story follows a boy named Craig (Keir Gilchrist) on a five day self-discovery journey in a psychiatric hospital he checks himself into after dealing with depression in his stressful life. He is guided with the help of his doctor Eden Minerva (Viola Davis; Oscar Nomination for “Doubt”) and fellow patient Bobby (Zach Galifianakis; “The Hangover”). These two relationships along with a very special girl named Noelle (Emma Roberts) change Craig’s life.


The Good: The film follows its genre as a dramatic comedy very well and isn’t over sentimental or Hollywoodized at all. Instead it is everything you would want a film with the title “It’s Kind of a Funny Story” to be. It really is kind of a funny story and a very good story with some very serious undertones. Overall, the acting in the film is very fulfilling and the variety of different character personas’ of the patients mesh very well in a perfect comedic melody. However, Zach Galifianakis is the biggest name actor in the film and steals the spotlight whenever the camera is on him. He plays a character that is very hard to describe. He is both troubled and enlightened, dramatic and comedic, and optimistic and pessimistic. What ever he is, all of the other characters feed off of his energy and look up to him on screen. Galifianekis is joined by Keir Gilchrist (Craig) Lauren Grahm (Craig’s Mother), Jim Gaffigan (Craig’s Father), Emma Roberts (Noelle), Thomas Mann (Aaron) and Zoe Kravitz (Nia). The cast is supported by a very well written adapted screenplay by Anna Fleck and Anna Boden that will make you laugh and cry.


The Bad: The actress, Zoe Kravitz, does not do a very good job playing Nia, Craig’s love interest from before he meets Noelle in the psychiatric hospital. She is a very annoying, stereotypical, stuck up girl that just isn’t very believable. It is very hard to believe that Craig would actually like her especially because she is his best friend, Aaron’s girlfriend. It is also hard to believe that Aaron is his best friend because he does not seem to treat Craig very good and does not act as a very good friend towards him. This makes both of these relationships to be very unimportant to the overall story.


Final Thought: We all could use a five day break from our lives so we can just enjoy the moment and relax without following a strict schedule that forces us to rush around. We all need contemplate the quotation that Craig’s doctor Eden Minerva states at the beginning of the film, “Lord, grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change. The courage to change the things I can. And the wisdom to know the difference.” Go to the theater and See It Now, the film that avoids the typical clichés of the psychiatric hospital comedy and it may just inspire you too.

WOW,i just came back from the I-max cinema and this movie was so so good! Prince of Persia makes Pirates of the Caribbean look like a joke..


I always loved the Prince of Persia games played the 2d ones and all the way up to two thrones, this movie had much resemblance to the game, but unlike other video game movies it wasn’t trying to hard to show it off to the audience.Best video game movie without a doubt!


I think the reason some people are rating this so low is because they are USED to rating video game movies so low as they have all failed up to now!


This movie deserves a solid 7.5/10.Ill rate it 10 right now because I’m just so amazed of how much i enjoyed this movie.


IF YOU GO INTO THE CINEMA TAKING THIS MOVIE SO SERIOUSLY YOU WILL BE DISAPPOINTED. This movie doesn’t try to be what its not.


It has amazing park-our,good romance, amazing action and fabulous special effects. I recommend this movie to everyone cause its truly awesome!

Following the murder of her father by hired hand Tom Chaney, 14-year-old farm girl Mattie Ross sets out to capture the killer. To aid her, she hires the toughest U.S. marshal she can find, a man with “true grit,” Reuben J. “Rooster” Cogburn. Mattie insists on accompanying Cogburn, whose drinking, sloth, and generally reprobate character do not augment her faith in him. Against his wishes, she joins him in his trek into the Indian Nations in search of Chaney. They are joined by Texas Ranger LaBoeuf, who wants Chaney for his own purposes. The unlikely trio find danger and surprises on the journey, and each has his or her “grit” tested.

Get the comparisons out of the way, then give the film its due.


Let’s get the comparisons with Henry Hathaway’s version of the Charles Portis novel out of the way. The Coen Brothers certainly knew that, however much they want to ‘go back to the source material,’ their film would play against Hathaway’s version.


The Hathaway version, while tampering with details from the Portis original, remains strikingly true to its story and theme. This is most clear in the dialog – the decision not to tamper with Portis’ language was decisive for the making of that film. The Coens’ tampering with the novel is more subtle than Hathaway’s film, but no less an interpretation.


Approaching the characters and composition of the Coens’ version without reference to the Hathaway film apparently proved impossible. For instance, the shoot-out at the dug-out cabin was re-written for a night-scene, but the camera angles remain pretty much the high-elevation shots Lucien Ballard provided Hathaway, inter-cut with full body shots of people getting wounded and horses running (etc.)also similar to Ballard’s.


Two performance stand out as striking examples of reference to the original film. Dakin Matthews seems to struggle mightily not to recreate Strother Martin’s interpretation of the horse-trader Stonehill


  • and fails. Apparently Martin had the character down pat and there’s

nothing but to reproduce his interpretation. Far more to the point is Barry Pepper’s interpretation of the desperate outlaw chief, Ned Pepper


  • it is pure Robert Duvall. Pepper can only match Duvall’s self-aware

determination – and he does – but he can’t surpass it; nor can he find another interpretation to set off against Duvall’s.


As for the Coens’ own re-interpretation of the Portis novel, what was most noticeable to me were the minor points simply dropped out of the story telling. The most irritating to me were a pair of lapses that are interconnected and combine to make an important point about the characters. 1. We never get to see Mattie tell Rooster that Chaney has linked up with Ned Pepper (later Rooster does remark the fact, but how did he learn of it?); 2 We don’t get to hear Rooster’s remarking how he shot Pepper through the upper lip (because he was aiming at the lower lip). These two incidents combine to let the audience know that Cogburn’s hidden agenda on the Chaney hunt is really Ned Pepper, he and Pepper have something of a feud going on – which information fills out the background detail for their final shoot-out. Except here we don’t have that connection.


Finally, the whole Mattie – Rooster issue: many critics are saying that Mattie is more at the center here than in the Hathaway picture, which focused attention on John Wayne’s Cogburn. Not true. When we add up screen time and lines of dialog, we discover that Mattie not only has as much time and dialog in the Hathaway film but it is in much the same proportion to Cogburn’s as in this one. If most remember the Hathaway film as a ‘John Wayne film,’ that is due simply to Wayne’s bravura performance.


Well, enough of the comparisons. Does the Coens’ version measure up as film worth seeing on its own accord? Yes; we are presented here with a beautiful, frightening, amusing piece of ‘Americana.’ There are scenes approaching dream-like states, as in the meeting with the bear-man, and during Rooster’s desperate drive to get Mattie to a doctor. Hailee Steinfeld is quite engaging, and Matt Damon develops an intriguing complexity that makes one wish he had more screen-time. Bridges’ performance is the most problematic – Bridges plays Cogburn as a a kind of whimsical brute – as he rambles on with his life-story on the trail, we get the gnawing sense that, if we were not along for a dangerous manhunt and dependent on his abilities as a master man-hunter, Cogburn would be someone we would not like to know. This develops a distance between the audience and Cogburn that is actually rather on par for the Coens – there are no ‘heros’ in the Coen universe.


Perhaps that’s a good thing here. Mattie in her experiences with the wild men of the old west has encountered something larger than her life on the farm could ever get her. These are men who make their own laws and are not bound to statutory codes or biblical decrees, and adapt their own law to the wilds of the frontier that surrounds them. Mattie is a confirmed church-goer with a good lawyer, and if she weren’t so determined on her revenge, she would actually be impossibly small-minded and dull. This is a subtext to the novel that both films attempt to convey, but neither quite captures, because it’s difficult for any film maker to admit that the central character of the story is the least interesting.


The age of such wild-men has passed. It is not that wild-men do not exist – wild-men show up quite frequently in Coen Brothers’ films in contemporary settings – but now they are corrupted by moving outside the law and outside the commonplace, they grow sick and psychopathic. The killer in “Fargo” feeding the partner he’s killed to a wood-chipper is as wild as one could get, but he is no longer larger than life, and evokes only the sickness at the heart of modernity, not any adaptation one would want to live with.


We look back at historical moments like those of the Old West because anything seemed possible to them, whereas very little is possible for us. But that might simply be a wishful delusion – and the Coens’ clear suspicion that it is really determines the limits of what they accomplish here. They don’t present the West as ‘it really was,’ nor do they present what we want from it, rather they present a disappointment with it. Rooster Cogburn is indeed ‘larger than life,’ but we wouldn’t want to spend any more time with him than we do.

Awesome!


I really liked “Lucky Number Slevin”, so I thought I’d go watch this movie too. The bad reviews here troubled me some, but in the end it was well worth it.


The film has a great visual style and is well paced. There is only one subplot that I can think of that we could do without (that drug addict sister) but the rest was well done. The authors were well cast, their acting was good, and I think they played well together. It seemed like they had fun.


The action sequences were nice to look at, the robberies spectacular, lots of stuff gets blown up.


I suggest you watch this movie, you won’t be disappointed. Some of you may look for more X and others will find it lacking in Y, but you can’t say that this film is bad, that the actors are horrible or that the director doesn’t know what he’s doing.


I thoroughly enjoyed it and give it a 9, because it is up there with my personal favorites.
